Menschenerziehung oder Schulbildung? Pädagogische Übergänge ins 19. Jahrhundert
[Formation of the person or school education? Pedagogical transitions into the 19th century]
With the establishment of the state schools towards the end of the 18th century, the question arose as to the goals and possibilities of public education. What was (and to the present day continues to be) seen as the fundamental problem was the issue of whether and to what extent the school should primarily transmit knowledge or if it should go beyond that and engage in «formation of the person» – as it were as an heirloom from the losses in a secular world. Jürgen Oelker's contribution shows that since the late 1700s, the demand to «form the person» has been formulated both from outside the school and within the school, and he makes a plea for a school that, without idealistic rhetoric, can recognize and fulfill its actual task.
