Dramatic performances put on for the public were apparently a part of the city and citizen culture of the early modern age, following upon the tradition of the carnival plays of the late Middle Ages. A special variant of this early bourgeois culture took place in the sixteenth century in the small, Catholic city-state Solothurn in Switzerland, as here secular plays were performed. In the following article, Georg Gotthard shows that motives of citizen education were harbored in this undertaking.
