Basic Primary and Secondary School in Zurich 1832-2007
The history of the school is a topic that is only marginally treated in teacher education. This is the case not least because of a lack of relevant literature. Since the canton government of Zurich passed the law on the organization of the basic primary and secondary school system on 9 October, 1832, the Zurich schools have – with setbacks – continuously developed: both the social and economic status of the school and the social recognition of the teaching profession increased. The 175 years of the public schools of Zurich, even in a level-headed assessment, are a history of success. This readable history of the school was developed based on the methodology of the Grammar of Schooling (David Tyack, William Tobin) and neo-institutionalism (John W. Meyer, Brian Rowan).
